Which pet is best?

Last week we looked at the pros and cons of getting a pet for your son. If you’re considering adding a pet to the family, we’ve done a deep dive into the various pet options for kids that live in suburban areas.

It’s important to think about space, time, and how active your child is. Here are some great pet options, each with unique benefits:

Dogs

Dogs are often loyal companions and can become your son’s best friend. Just make sure there are plenty of parks and open spaces where you and your child can go for walks, play fetch, and enjoy the outdoors together.

Pros: Great for active kids. Teaches responsibility and routine. Excellent companionship. Different breeds to fit your family.

Cons: Require a lot of time and attention. Costs for food, vet care, and grooming.

Cats

Getting a cat can be a great choice for young kids. Cats are often snuggly and wonderful companions for boys who enjoy quiet time at home. They also don’t need as much space as a dog.

Pros: Low maintenance. Great companionship. Suitable for smaller spaces

Cons: Some people may be allergic to cats. Cats can be distant and might not always want to cuddle or interact. Regular maintenance of the litter box is necessary. Vet care can be costly.

Rabbits

Rabbits are quiet, low-maintenance pets that do well in smaller homes or suburban backyards. They don’t need a lot of space, but a small backyard or a spacious room for exercise is ideal. Rabbits can be very interactive with their owners and can teach kids how to care for a small animal.

Pros: Low maintenance. Quiet and calm. Good for small spaces.

Cons: Need a secure area to roam freely. Can chew on furniture or wires if not supervised. Cage needs regular cleaning.

Fish (Goldfish)

Fish are low maintenance, calming, and visually appealing pets. A simple aquarium setup with a couple of goldfish can be a great introduction to the responsibility of pet ownership. They are ideal for families in suburban areas who may not have the time or space for larger pets.

Pros: Low maintenance. Great for small spaces. Pretty to look at. Easy to care for.

Cons: Limited interaction—won’t form a bond like other pets. Aquarium cleaning can be time-consuming.

When choosing a pet for your son, consider how much time he’s able to dedicate to pet care and what kind of space you have. If your family is active and loves the outdoors, a dog might be the best choice. If you’re looking for something low-maintenance and fun, fish or rabbits could be ideal.

Talk to friends that have pets already to get further insight into the joys (or pitfalls) of certain animals. Always remember to research the specific needs of the pet to ensure it’s a good fit for your family’s lifestyle!
