Making friends and fitting in

We are well into the school year and if your son is lucky, he has found his friendship group and looks forward to school and socialising with his peers each day.

Friends play a big role in forming identity and how your son sees himself. In addition, friendships help to build communication skills and an understanding of differences.

Unfortunately, not everyone finds it easy to make friends. Many children struggle to meet people and make connections, often feeling worried they will be rejected, embarrass themselves, or perhaps feel so nervous they will freeze up and not know what to say.

As parents, we can support our sons and let them know that making friends can sometimes be tricky – but it’s not a reflection on them as a person. They just haven’t found their people yet.

If your son is having a tough time, the suggestions below may be helpful.

Handy hints for making friends

Focus on things you have in common like a favourite band, sport, TV show or book.

Be kind by sharing positive things about others or break the ice with a genuine compliment!

Use positive body language like smiling, making eye contact and talking confidently. It can all help.

Have some fun, bring your sense of humour, and be ready to keep things light and fun.

Mix up your routine and talk to someone different or try something new like a hobby or sport where you can meet other people.

Show an interest in others by asking them questions about things they’re interested in or things that you might have in common.

Be a good listener and make sure you give the other person a chance to talk before jumping in with another question or comment!

Reflect on how you’ve made friends in the past, you’re better at it than you think. Ask yourself What did you do well? Can you do that again?

Friends bring happiness and a sense of belonging. Having good friends can make school and life in general much more enjoyable.

Talk to your son about the qualities he likes about himself and how those qualities would make him a good friend. Building lasting friendships takes time.  Be brave, be patient and keep trying.
