Helping boys manage exam stress
As exam season approaches, it’s natural for boys to feel a mix of motivation and anxiety. Some stress can be helpful – it sharpens focus and encourages preparation – but too much can quickly become overwhelming. Helping boys find a healthy balance is key.
Dr Ray Swann, Executive Director of the Foundation for Positive Masculinity, often speaks about the importance of understanding how boys respond to pressure and emotion. As he explains, “Helping them understand themselves, express emotion, and stay true to their values” can make all the difference when challenges arise.
Parents play a vital role in this process. Here are a few ways to support your son through exam time:
- Keep perspective. Remind your son that exams are just one part of his learning journey. Focusing on effort, not just results, helps build resilience.
- Encourage structure. Support him to set up a simple study routine that includes breaks and movement. Boys often concentrate better in short, focused bursts.
- Prioritise rest and nutrition. Good sleep, hydration, and balanced meals improve focus and mood far more than late-night cramming.
- Create calm. Boys tend to mirror the emotional tone at home. If you stay relaxed and supportive, they’re more likely to do the same.
- Acknowledge progress. Recognise the small wins – finishing a revision topic or sticking to a plan – to keep motivation up.
Dr Swann’s approach highlights that academic growth is just one part of developing confident, well-balanced young men. When boys learn to manage their stress and express how they feel, they not only perform better in exams, they build skills for life.
With gentle encouragement, realistic expectations and a calm environment, parents can help their sons face exam season with confidence, balance and self-belief.
