Why extra-curricular activities matter for boys
Extra-curricular activities are more than just after-school filler, they’re meaningful opportunities for boys to grow in confidence, resilience and overall happiness. By trying new things, they get to explore what they love, connect with others and build life skills that go well beyond the classroom.
Research from the University of Queensland confirms this with strong evidence: adolescents engaged in these activities often show better academic performance, healthier peer relationships, and fewer behavioural issues.
In addition, a national study by ACER (Australian Council for Educational Research) emphasised the difference extra-curriculars make for boys in particular. Dr John Ainley, Deputy Director at ACER, shared:
“Participation by students in extracurricular activities at their school promotes a feeling of connectedness to the school community which has a flow-on effect to more academic parts of the curriculum.”
More than just sport
While we often default to sport as the go-to activity for boys, activities such as dance can also deliver powerful benefits. Something like dance builds physical coordination, confidence and creativity – and it’s inclusive, making space for boys who may not feel at home in traditional team sports.
As the State Library of Queensland points out, dance encourages whole-child development:
“When children dance, they use their whole body to explore movement, develop body awareness and concentration… play through movement and rhythm lays the groundwork for important skills needed for early literacy and learning.”
How parents can support
Explore together Offer choices across sports, music, art, drama, or dance. Let your son discover what feels right.
Keep it enjoyable Encourage curiosity, not pressure. If his heart’s not in an activity, it won’t stick.
Celebrate the effort Acknowledge what he tries, learns, and experiences – no matter how big or small.
Extracurricular activities give boys a sense of purpose, community and growth. Think outside the box if you need to. There are so many wonderful opportunities for our young men.
