Meditation for your little ones
Meditation can be a great way to help kids manage their emotions, focus better at school, and communicate more kindly with family and friends, and while getting kids to sit still can be tough, according to Headspace, meditation from a young age is worth it.
What are the benefits of meditation for kids?
- It can improve focus, working memory, and even help with key skills like reading and maths.
- Meditation helps children become more aware of how they learn, making them better students.
- Beyond academics, it boosts emotional intelligence, helping kids manage their feelings, build empathy, and develop resilience.
- Studies show that meditation increases calmness and self-acceptance, which is especially helpful as boys navigate growing up.
What age can they start?
It might seem tricky for younger kids to grasp meditation, but evidence shows children as young as 4-5 can be ready to start. At this age, they’re developing an awareness of their thoughts and an understanding that others have different perspectives.
Andy Puddicombe, co-founder of Headspace, believes kids naturally ‘get’ meditation because their flexible minds easily stay in the moment – even from as young as 3 years old.
Starting early can nurture their mental development and helps to make meditation fun.
How can I help my son meditate?
Try practising in a quiet space alongside them instead of finding a quiet spot alone.
Explain what you’re doing and why, even if they giggle or can’t sit still. Normalising meditation can help them feel comfortable.
Introduce mindfulness activities like mindful breathing, bedtime rituals, or nature walks to help them be present.
Explore different approaches together and keep it fun!
Overtime, meditation can train the mind to become less easily distracted, and increase feelings of calmness, relaxation and self-awareness – why not give it a go with your son?
