Why Sleep Matters for Your Son
Sleep isn’t just rest, it’s essential for your son’s growing body and mind. While he’s asleep, his brain is busy building memories, repairing tissues, and making important hormones. Without enough sleep, he may struggle with mood swings, poor concentration, irritability, and even increased anxiety or depression.
Teen boys need about 9 – 10 hours of sleep a night, but most only get around 7 – 8. This sleep gap can affect their health, school performance, and emotional wellbeing. Experts warn that getting less than 6 hours of sleep can have similar effects on the brain as being slightly tipsy!
Clinical psychologist Andrew Fuller explains that key parts of the brain, like those involved in managing emotions and decision-making, develop during sleep—especially after the sixth hour. That means sleep is one of the most powerful tools to support your son’s mental health.
Five tips to encourage healthy sleep patterns for your son
1. Have a consistent bedtime
2. Keep bedrooms tech free
3. Ensure their bedroom is at a cool but comfortable temperature
4. Make time to unwind before sleep by establishing a healthy evening routine. About an hour before bed take some time to decompress – this could be reading a book, practising relaxation or meditation or taking a warm bath.
5. Get out of bed at the same time every morning
